To give his team the best chance at a deep postseason run, Ravens GM Eric DeCosta got on the phone with the NFL's top dealmaker. The Baltimore Ravens addressed their most pressing offensive line need Wednesday by acquiring two-time Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens from the Philadelphia Eagles.

Baltimore is sending a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 second-round selection to Philadelphia for Jurgens and a 2027 seventh-rounder, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported. The deal gives the Ravens an experienced center and more options for an offensive line tasked with protecting Lamar Jackson and opening running lanes for Derrick Henry.

Here are seven takeaways from the trade.

1. Baltimore found an answer to its center crisis

The Ravens needed a more sustainable solution after centers Danny Pinter, Jovaughn Gwyn and Ethan Pocic landed on injured reserve. Those losses forced Baltimore to move first-round guard Vega Ioane to center.

Jurgens gives the Ravens an established player at a position where injuries had exhausted their veteran options. His arrival should reduce the need for emergency adjustments once he is available.

The acquisition addresses the personnel shortage. Whether it fully stabilizes the position will depend on Jurgens’ health, performance, and adjustment to Baltimore’s offense.

2. Vega Ioane can return to guard

Ioane handled his first start at center against Tennessee, giving Baltimore a workable solution during a difficult stretch. Adding Jurgens creates a path for the rookie to return to guard.

That possibility could improve two positions with one acquisition. Baltimore would gain an experienced center while letting Ioane focus on the role for which he was originally drafted.

3. Contract control extends through 2029

Jurgens signed a four-year extension with Philadelphia in 2025 that runs through the 2029 season. Baltimore is acquiring a player it can build around for several years.

That control helps explain the willingness to surrender a second-round pick. The Ravens can evaluate the trade over multiple seasons, with an opportunity to establish continuity between Jurgens, Jackson, and the guards.

4. Concussion protocol creates immediate uncertainty

Jurgens entered the NFL’s concussion protocol after self-reporting symptoms Monday following Philadelphia’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams. His debut remains dependent on completing the required return-to-participation process.

Once cleared, he will also need to learn Baltimore’s terminology and develop timing with his new teammates.

5. The draft cost is substantial

The 2028 second-round pick is the deal's main price. Baltimore also gives up a fifth-round selection in 2027 in exchange for Philadelphia’s seventh-rounder that year.

A second-round pick offers an opportunity to acquire a young starter on a rookie contract. The Ravens surrendered that possibility for greater certainty at a position where they could no longer comfortably rely on their existing depth.

The cost will be easier to justify if Jurgens becomes a dependable starter beyond this season. Continued injuries or inconsistent play would make the lost draft capital more consequential.

6. The immediate cap burden is manageable

Over the Cap lists Jurgens’ 2026 base salary at $1.215 million. Baltimore assumes the unpaid portion of that salary, while bonus proration associated with money Philadelphia already paid remains with the Eagles.

That structure limits the immediate cap strain. The Ravens can add an accomplished blocker without absorbing the full cap charge he carried in Philadelphia.

Future seasons require a larger financial commitment, but the modest remaining salary makes the acquisition easier to accommodate during the current season.

7. The trade signals an intent to contend now

General manager Eric DeCosta used future draft resources to address a weakness affecting Baltimore’s current offense. That is a clear investment in the Ravens’ ability to compete this season.

Jurgens cannot resolve Jackson’s ankle injury, eliminate penalties, or guarantee consistent second-half production. He can give Baltimore a stronger foundation from which to address those problems.

The move raises expectations for the offensive line.
