The Game of Thrones TV series ended in 2019, but the popular franchise has continued in recent years, with the premiere of House of the Dragon, and now another prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
The new HBO fantasy stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall, a "hedge knight," which "is like a knight, but only sadder," as is jokingly explained in the show's trailer.
The latest Game of Thrones adaptation is based on George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts The Hedge Knight, the first in the series of short novels.

When does A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premiere?

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres Jan. 18 on HBO.
According to the network, the first episode will be 45 minutes long.
In October 2025, A Knight of Seven Kingdoms showrunner Ira Parker explained to Entertainment Weekly why this "totally different version" of the Game of Thrones world "that everybody seems to know so well was very, very appealing" to him.
"The fact that we live in this world, though, where magic once existed is very interesting to me," he said. "This is the ground and the grass that has seen dragons and dragon fire before. So everything is just like how the world is, but a little stranger, a little different."

'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' season 1
The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms consists of six episodes.
House of the Dragon co-creator and showrunner Ryan Condal originally pitched a series based on the Dunk and Egg novellas, telling Entertainment Weekly in May 2024 how, "Those always stuck with me as such a wonderful counterpoint to George's world."
"Which was really about the upper crust of the 1 percent: the kings and the high lords and ladies who essentially waged the game of thrones at the expense of the small folk," he continued. "Well, Dunk and Egg is about the small folk who suffer at the hands of the game of thrones as it's played by the nobles."
Parker, a writer on House of the Dragon, took over as writer and executive producer for the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
