Bella Thorne says she’s writing, directing, and starring in the Spring Breakers sequel

Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain comes 13 years after the original, and several producers from the first movie are returning

“Balls to the wall. That’s what everyone says when they read this script,” Thorne told Alex Cooper on Call Her Daddy

Not only is Bella Thorne starring in the new Spring Breakers — she says she’s also writing and directing the sequel.

The Shake It Up alum, 28, opened up about her multiple roles in bringing Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain to fruition — in front of and behind the camera, and in the writer’s room, too. The follow-up to the popular cult crime thriller, which starred Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco, was announced in May 2025, 13 years after the original.

In an appearance on Alex Cooper‘s Call Her Daddy podcast, Thorne said the forthcoming movie is for people who want to “go to the theater and have fun.”

“This time, things are different. They are crazy,” Thorne, who made her directorial debut with Color Your Hurt, said. “There’s a lot of craziness. There’s a lot of litness. There is so much litness in this movie.”

“Balls to the wall. That’s what everyone says when they read this script,” she added. “Balls to the wall.”

Per Variety, at the time the sequel was first announced in 2025, Matthew Bright was attached to direct the project.

A synopsis for the film, obtained by Variety at the time, reads, “When their trip explodes out of control, they’re forced to outrun the chaos they’ve created,” and was described as a “bold new ride for Gen Z.”

The original, which starred Gomez, Hudgens, Franco, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine, followed a group of students who hold up a restaurant as a chaotic way of funding their spring break trip to Florida. When all four girls are arrested for drug use, a local drug dealer (Franco) bails them out and subsequently draws them into a gang turf war.
