Billie Lourd told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview that her two young children are “deeply obsessed” with Star Wars

The film franchise famously starred Lourd’s late mother, Carrie Fisher, as Princess Leia

Billie Lourd’s kids are big fans of a major family legacy.

“They’re obsessed with Star Wars. They’re so deeply obsessed,” the actress, 34, who is mom to son Kingston, 6, and daughter Jackson, 3, told PEOPLE exclusively at the premiere of her new film, Artificial, in New York City on Oct. 5.

The first three Star Wars films — which were released in 1977, 1980 and 1983, respectively — famously starred Lourd’s late mother, Carrie Fisher, as Princess Leia, alongside Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill.

Fisher reprised her Princess Leia role — this time as General Leia — in 2015’s The Force Awakens, and she later posthumously appeared in 2017’s The Last Jedi, following her death at age 60 a year prior.

In 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, Fisher made another posthumous appearance via unused and repurposed archival footage from the prior films.

“It’s so deep in all of our veins, and it’s so fun to get to watch them watch that,” Lourd said of her children’s Star Wars love.

“It’s the most special thing of all time. I call it a high- budget home movie. It’s really amazing,” she added.

Like her mother, Lourd also starred in the legendary space-based franchise, playing Lieutenant Kaydel Ko Connix in the most recent trilogy.

She additionally stood in as a body double for Fisher during a flashback sequence in the latest of the three most recent Skywalker Saga movies.

While speaking to Yahoo! in 2020, the films’ visual effects supervisor, Patrick Tubach, said that day on set was especially meaningful.

“Billie was playing her mother,” Tubach told the outlet during the interview. “It was a poignant thing, and something that nobody took lightly — that she was willing to stand in for her mom.”

“It was an emotional thing for everybody to see her in that position,” he continued. “It felt great for us, too. If you’re going to have someone play [Carrie’s] part, it’s great that it’s [Billie] because there are a lot of similarities between them that we were able to draw from.”

Speaking with PEOPLE at the Artificial premiere, Lourd shared which of her other acting roles her kids have seen her in.

“They’ve walked in on some [American] Horror Story stuff and been a little freaked out, which is probably not safe,” she joked, referring to the scary FX series.

“They love Smurfs,” Lourd added, nodding to her role as Worry Smurf in the 2025 animated musical. “I did Smurfs for them, and that was so cool.”

Lourd shares Kingston and Jackson with her husband, Austen Rydell. The couple first began dating in 2016 after having been friends for years.

Rydell and Lourd announced their engagement in June 2020, and they tied the knot in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in March 2022.

“We wrote our own vows and sobbed the entire time,” Lourd told Vogue about her wedding at the time. “Word to the wise — always wear waterproof everything!”

She added that the ceremony included a nod to her late mother. “In true Carrie fashion, we threw glitter in the air at the end of the ceremony. It was magical. I could not have dreamed up a more perfect wedding,” Lourd told the outlet.

Artificial hits theaters on Dec. 25.
