The hit Blue Bloodsspinoff series returns to CBS on Friday, Oct. 9 for its sophomore season, a milestone that brought the entire cast to tears, according to star Donnie Wahlberg.

“I had the pleasure of calling all my castmates and telling them … that we were getting a season two,” the actor told PEOPLE in March 2026. “Every cast member got tears in their eyes, every single one of them, and so did I.”

The cast’s excitement is understandable as even more Reagans will appear in Boston Blue‘s second season with Blue Bloods alum Will Estes reprising his role as Jamie Reagan. However, fans shouldn’t expect to see the family’s famed patriarch just yet.

“It remains wish fulfillment on our part,” co-showrunner Brandon Margolis told ScreenRant in October 2026 of what it would take to get Tom Selleck back in the Boston Blue universe as NYPD commissioner Frank Reagan. “It’s a long, never-ending conversation, let’s put it that way. Because as much as we love Tom, we know how busy he is.”

The second season of Boston Blue premieres on Friday, Oct. 9, with Boston Police Department detectives Danny Reagan (Wahlberg) and Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) taking on one of their toughest cases yet: a Boston strangler copycat. But finding a potential serial killer may be the least of their worries.

Boston District Attorney hopeful Thad Longfellow (Ward Horton) will play an even bigger role in his election against current D.A. Mae Silver (Gloria Reuben), which is set to be a major storyline throughout season 2. Margolis told TV Insiderin October 2026 that “his presence is felt immediately in the premiere as a reminder of what’s coming.”

The show’s return will also address Danny’s pursuit of becoming a sergeant and Lena’s ongoing investigation into Detective Brian Rodgers’ (Ryan Broussard) attack. Co-showrunner Brandon Sonnier promisedthat the first episode gives “very concrete answers” about what happened and it “will drive the rest of the season.”

CBS has not released the total episode count for season 2 of Boston Blue.

The first season, which premiered in October 2025, was given a 20-episode order — a standard network run that Margolis acknowledged was becoming less prominent in the streaming era.

“Certainly there’s not as much of it [US network TV] as there used to be, but I do think audiences have a taste for seasons that go longer than eight to 13 episodes,” he told Drama Quarterlyin October 2025. “You see the way people found Suits on Netflix. So there is a comfort and familiarity to the model that audiences really enjoy.”
