The season explores Maggie’s struggle to balance her career, relationships and unresolved feelings from Liam’s unexpected return
Morgan Kohan’s Maggie Sullivan is caught between her past and present in an emotional new look at Sullivan’s Crossing.
In PEOPLE’s exclusive clip from the season 4 premiere, Maggie (Kohan) shares an intimate moment with her ex-husband Liam (Marcus Rosner) before reality quickly sets in with her current love, Cal (Chad Michael Murray).
The scene begins with Maggie lying in bed beside Liam, visibly mesmerized as he gently strokes her arm. “I never thought I would see you again,” she tells him.
“And I’m so sorry,” Liam replies. “If I could change what happened, I would.”

Maggie then reminds him, “I’m with Cal now.”
“Just give me another chance, Red,” Liam pleads, before the two share a kiss.
But the moment is short-lived. Maggie suddenly wakes up to Cal standing beside her bed with coffee in hand. “Hey, brought you some coffee,” he says, as she looks flustered.
“Sounded like you had a pretty good dream,” Cal adds. “Yeah,” Maggie replies coyly.
When he presses her for details, Maggie brushes him off, taking a sip of her coffee and noting that she’s running late. She then questions why he didn’t wake her sooner. “You were up pretty late. I didn’t think it would hurt to let you sleep in a little,” Cal says.
Still on edge, Maggie points out that Sully (Scott Patterson) just left and insists she doesn’t want things to “slide around here.” She quickly apologizes, admitting she’s been feeling “overwhelmed” by everything.
“It all took me by surprise,” she says.

But Cal isn’t convinced. “He’s not the only one full of surprises lately,” he responds pointedly.
“Cal…” Maggie begins, before he cuts in: “I just thought you’d mention being married before.”

The tense exchange hints at the complications ahead as Maggie’s past threatens to unravel her present.
Season 4 picks up after Liam’s shocking arrival in the season 3 finale, throwing Maggie’s renewed commitment to Cal into question. As she tries to move forward with a new direction in her career — and her relationship — Liam’s return forces her to confront whether she can truly leave her past behind.
In the premiere episode, titled “Curveballs,” Maggie begins digging into the real reason for Liam’s return, while Cal struggles with growing jealousy. Elsewhere, tensions rise across the Crossing as relationships are tested and new challenges emerge.
The role has been especially meaningful for Murray, who previously told PEOPLE he “prayed every single night” for a project like Sullivan’s Crossing.
“I wanted a show that didn’t feel gratuitous, that was very family-friendly, that ended up in a very beautiful location where my family and I felt like we could integrate into the community … with a cast that we’d all get along and everyone would bond,” he said. “It was a very specific, very detailed prayer … and then came Sullivan’s Crossing, and here we are going into season 4."
Adapted from Robyn Carr’s bestselling books, the series chronicles the life of Maggie Sullivan, a Boston neurosurgeon whose once-thriving career is derailed by legal troubles. Seeking a fresh start, she returns to her Nova Scotia hometown to reconnect with her estranged father.
While adjusting to small-town life, she falls into a slow-burn romance with Cal (Murray), the handyman at her dad’s campground. Maggie and Cal’s relationship was tested multiple times throughout the first two seasons, and season 3 was no exception.
“There’s never a dull moment at Sullivan’s Crossing,” showrunner and executive producer Roma Roth told Collider in July 2025. “A romance drama series needs to have push and pull between your characters. We’re going to have a pretty big shoe drop at the end of the season that we’ll get to see play out in season 4.”
Sullivan’s Crossing season 4 premieres Monday, April 20, at 8 p.m. on The CW. Past seasons are currently streaming on Netflix.
