Keen Ruffalo is sharing his dad Mark Ruffalo’s reaction to him wanting to become an actor.

The Sterling Point star said that his Marvel dad questioned whether or not he really wanted to become a star.

Mark also warned him that there was “definitely less criticism” in other jobs.

While visiting the Today show on Friday, the Sterling Pointactor revealed that his Marvel star dad asked him one very important question after he expressed his desire to follow in his parents’ Hollywood footsteps.

“He was definitely supportive, but he’s like, ‘You sure you wanna do this?’” Keen recalled. “He’s like, ‘[There’s] definitely less criticism in other [professions].’”

It’s not surprising that Keen would be keen to give acting a try, as both his dad and mom, Sunrise Coigney, are actors. Mark most recently starred in the box office smash hit Spider-Man: Brand New Day, while Coigney’s credits include projects like In the Cut and Campfire Stories.

But, as Keen told the Today hosts, acting wasn’t necessarily his first love.

“I was starting my freshman year of college just before COVID happened, and I was going for fashion design originally,” he explained. “And I dropped out not long after we ended up separating for COVID.”

As the world navigated the pandemic, Keen shared that he began to suffer from “COVID depression” and was searching for a fresh start, so he took a page from his parents.

“I need to change, and I was lost at the time,” he said. “And so I saw that acting made my dad so happy and I was like, ‘Listen, I need to try something new.’”

In the years since, Keen has gone on to land roles on the romantic drama Sterling Point as well as the upcoming comedy film Nimrods. The Green Day-inspired project opens on Aug. 14, just a little over a week after Sterling Point dropped its first season on Prime Video.

In addition to Keen, Mark and Sunshine, who have been married since 2000, are also parents to daughters Bella, 21, and Odette, 18.
