Meghan Markle’s Senior Rescue Dog Gets a Special Shoutout 4 Years After She and Prince Harry Adopted Her

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s rescue dog, Mamma Mia, received a special shoutout from the Beagle Freedom Project on Friday.

Four years after Markle and Harry adopted Mamma Mia, the rescue took a moment to spotlight her story and shine a light on their mission to save beagles from animal testing.

BFP also shared a clip of the senior rescue dog wearing a silver party hat while celebrating Markle’s 45th birthday.

On August 7, the Beagle Freedom Project shared a tribute to the beagle, affectionately called Mia, almost exactly four years after Prince Harry and Markle adopted her in August 2022, per The New York Times.

“This is Mamma Mia,” began a voiceover for the video montage, posted to X. “She was rescued from the animal testing industry when Envigo breeding facility was shut down in 2022. Not only is she resilient, but now, she’s royal. Her incredible rescue story captured the hearts of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.”

The voiceover continued, “Meghan personally called BFP’s Founder and President Shannon Keith, expressing interest in adopting Mamma Mia. Soon after that, Meghan and Prince Harry were playing with Mamma Mia and her pups in the backyard of the BFP headquarters.”

The organization, dedicated to “rescuing and rehoming animals used in experimental research,” also shared footage of the beagle at home with Markle, who celebrated her 45th birthday just days earlier on August 4. “And, four years later, Mamma Mia is wearing a silver party hat and being silly with her loving forever family, celebrating her mom’s birthday. And they lived happily ever after.”

Pula, the Duke and Duchess’s black Labrador retriever, also appeared in the background, wearing a silver party hat and enjoying a stretch in the living room.

From acting as Markle’s sous chef as she bakes to crashing her photo shoots, Mamma Mia has stolen the hearts of the Duke and Duchess’s Instagram followers. While Markle didn’t publicly comment on the post, she frequently features the senior beagle on her As Ever social media accounts. The Duchess of Sussex has shown her love for dogs in general on several occasions, often stopping to greet the four-legged friends during her public outings with Harry.

In January 2025, Markle mourned the loss of her beloved beagle, Guy, who she adopted in 2015. “Thank you for so many years of unconditional love, my sweet Guy,” Markle captioned an Instagram video montage, which featured photos of herself and Prince Harry making memories with Guy over the years. “You filled my life in ways you’ll never know ❤️‍🩹.”
