Phoebe Bridgers Appears to Reference Ex Paul Mescal and Girlfriend Gracie Abrams on New Album: ‘She Took My Place’

Phoebe Bridgers seemingly references her relationship with ex Paul Mescal, as well as his romance with Gracie Abrams, on her new album, Lost Weekend

Bridgers, who is believed to have split from Mescal in late 2022, sings on the title track, “I’m supposed to be married but I called it off,” per The Guardian

Phoebe Bridgers appears to reference her relationship with ex Paul Mescal on her upcoming album, Lost Weekend.

Bridgers, 31, who is set to release the album on Aug. 14, seemingly confirmed the pair’s previous rumored engagement in the record’s title track, singing, “I’m supposed to be married but I called it off,” per The Guardian.

The U.K. newspaper, which was among the outlets to review the forthcoming release, also published lyrics from the album track “The Governor’s Waltz.”

The song seemingly references Mescal’s current girlfriend, Gracie Abrams, as Bridgers sings, “She can pretend to be me / Since she took my place in my bed, on that stage,” according to The Guardian.

PEOPLE has contacted reps for Bridgers, Mescal and Abrams for comment.

Bridgers and Mescal are believed to have split in late 2022, in the months after they attended the Telluride Film Festival together that September. Mescal had previously told PEOPLE that it was “really fun” bringing Bridgers with him into his “world.”

Split rumors then began to circulate when Bridgers featured on SZA‘s SOS, that was released in December of that year, on which she seemed to hint at a possible separation. On “Ghost Machine” the star sang about being “on my own,” and said that the lyrics had been written recently.

Mescal and Bridgers were first linked in 2020 after the singer tweeted she was “horny” after watching his show, Normal People. Later that year, Mescal starred in a music video for Bridgers’ song “Savior Complex.”

The couple then made their first public appearance together in November 2021 at the LACMA Gala, before they made their relationship Instagram official the following month.

Mescal previously insisted he wouldn’t address rumors about his breakup with Bridgers during a February 2023 interview with Vanity Fair.

At the time, the Gladiator II star noted that while there was a “temptation to say the status of my whatever,” he preferred to keep his personal life private, insisting that addressing rumors doesn’t “serve” him.

“The temptation still exists to be like, ‘Shut the f--- up. This is my life. This is what’s going on. Or this is what’s not going on.’ But moving forward as much as I can, that’s going to be my life that is private,” Mescal told the outlet.

Mescal is currently dating Abrams, 26, whom he’s been linked to since 2024, while Bridgers is believed to be in a relationship with comedian Bo Burnham, 35. Bridgers and Burnham have been spotted together numerous times since late 2022, though they’ve yet to confirm their romance.
