A royal expert claims that Prince William was forced to confront an “old wound” from his past, and the pain was linked to Kate Middleton‘s cancer journey that surfaced in the wake of the major news. The Prince of Wales reportedly went through a complex mix of emotions as he navigated the difficult period behind palace walls.

Prince William’s reported emotional reaction to Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnosis revealed

Prince William apparently experienced the reopening of a past trauma after Kate Middleton received her cancer diagnosis in 2024.

Per the Daily Express, a new book claims that the diagnosis deeply affected the entire family and especially shook the Prince of Wales. Royal expert Ingrid Seward writes in “Catherine & Diana” that for William, the announcement “carried with it the unmistakable scent of déjà vu.” After all, he lost his mother Diana when he was just 15.

The best-selling author states, “When Catherine fell ill, it wasn’t just a medical crisis. It was the reopening of an old wound he had spent decades learning to live around.” According to the royal expert, William felt pulled into a narrative he had never wanted to be part of, one that had already taken a significant emotional toll on him.

Seward further notes that the health news drove the royal heir to become even more hands-on within his family. He had to navigate his public role as a father to Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Privately, he supported his wife as a husband through her treatment and recovery. She continued, “The thought that he might lose her was intolerable to William, so he made sure he wouldn’t – by being there at every turn.”

Now back on her feet, Kate Middleton has resumed solo royal engagements, including a tour of Italy in May. In June, the Princess completed the Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. It is the same hospital that supported her during treatment.

The Waleses also met Sir Kevin Sinfield in Wakefield last month. The meeting followed his seven-in-seven ultra-marathon run for the MND Association in memory of Rob Burrow.
