- The night-shift characters of *The Pitt* have become fan favorites, leaving audiences clamoring for a season taking place overnight.
- Showrunner R. Scott Gemmill tells ** whether he and the writers would consider doing a season focused on the night shift.
- Gemmill also teases a little of what to expect in season 3, which was greenlit ahead of the season 2 premiere.
*The Pitt*'s Fourth of July day shift came to a close with Thursday's season 2 finale, but the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center's night crawlers are just getting started.
As Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle), Dr. Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi), and their residents finally wrap up after a particularly harrowing day shift thanks to a software outage, Dr. Jack Abbott (Shawn Hatosy) is raring to go. During a conversation with Robby that is interrupted with the announcement of an incoming trauma — "Some dude just pulled up, looks like he blew half his face off," intern Nazely (Sofia Hasmik) tells the physicians — the veteran doc playfully asks, "How can you not love this place?"
And wouldn't we love to watch Abbott and his misfit team work through the night. But while the number of night-shift characters we've gotten to know grew in season 2 — *Shrinking* star Luke Tennie joined as Dr. Crus Henderson, and Ayesha Harris was recently promoted to series regular for season 3 — it doesn't mean we’ll be getting a season that takes place while most of the city is sleeping.

"I think it's fun when we see the night shift, but it's not our show," showrunner R. Scott Gemmill tells **.
Gemmill explains that the night-shift crew is "used as a transition to show that the ER never stops and it just keeps going." It's all part of the series' hour-by-hour conceit.
"Even though our viewers end with the end of the [day] shift with our characters, the show keeps going," Gemmill says. "And so the idea is if you could keep watching, you could watch 24 hours a day and watch a night shift take over."

When asked about the possibility of a night-shift spinoff someday, Gemmill says with a laugh that it's not the first time the idea has been suggested to him.
While our hopes for a night-shift-focused season are dashed — at least for now — Gemmill does offer a few details on what audiences can expect in season 3 (which was greenlit ahead of the season 2 premiere), revealing that the writers' room for the season opened a little over a month ago.
"It won't take place on another holiday," Gemmill says. "We're going to go for a colder month, we're thinking November. Just to add some variety and deal with the different kinds of emergency situations that come through the door based on what time of year it is."
The first two seasons of *The Pitt* are available to stream on HBO Max.
