Sunday’s The Rookie panel at New York Comic Con contained several major casting announcements.

Stars Nathan Fillion, Melissa O’Neil, and Eric Winter will make crossover appearances on the upcoming spinoff, The Rookie: North.

The anchor series is getting two new guest stars in Troian Bellisario and Dulé Hill.

The already star-studded casts of The Rookie and its upcoming spinoff, The Rookie: North, are about to shine even brighter.

Series creator and showrunner Alexi Hawley and a panoply of actors from both series packed the stage at New York Comic Con on Sunday to discuss where the franchise is heading and who’s along for the ride. Hawley cued up a sizzle reel that offered fans an exclusive preview of the action to come, and Entertainment Weekly was there to break it all down.

“One of the things that we’re doing this season, which you might have noticed — in the last few frames of that sizzle is a little bit of a crossover,” Hawley explained. The Rookie star Nathan Fillion appeared in the footage from The Rookie: North, on a FaceTime call with spinoff star Jay Ellis. “So obviously you see Nathan might be in the pilot, but then we might also bring a couple of other people up during the course of the season,” he announced, gesturing toward Melissa O’Neil and Eric Winter.

The crowd went wild for the news that Fillion, O’Neil, and Winter, who have all appeared on the police procedural since its first season, will cross over for appearances on The Rookie: North. But that’s not all.

Hawley also announced that Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario and Psych’s Dulé Hill will appear on season 9 of The Rookie. Per Hawley, Bellisario will play Stevie, the latest LAPD rookie whom Fillion’s John Nolan is tasked with training. Stevie is “a single mom of two who’s trying to restart her life after a painful divorce... it’s a rookie that we’ve never had before on the show: somebody who’s not starting out from scratch. So, we’re super excited about her.”

Hill, meanwhile, will play “a new watch commander with some stuff going on, I think it’s safe to say,” Hawley cryptically teased.

A representative for ABC confirmed Fillion, O’Neil, and Winter’s crossovers, as well as Bellisario and Hill appearing on season 9 in guest roles.

Fillion, O’Neil, and Ellis all joined Hawley on the NYCC panel. O’Neil raved that Belisario is “incredible” in the role of Stevie after Hawley announced her name.

They were also joined by Richard T. Jones, Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Shawn Ashmore, Lisseth Chavez, and Deric Augustine. Ellis was the only member of the spinoff cast to make an appearance, though several others have already been announced for major roles on the show, including Chris Sullivan, Janet Montgomery, Froy Gutierrez, Mya Lowe, and Malik Watson.

O’Neil also teared up when describing her time on the spinoff. “The truth is that there was admittedly a very strong spirit of reverence. They were like, ‘We want to, like, take care of the batons...’ Everyone was so graceful and caring and loving towards the work on the show and so it felt very — I was very touched by that.”

When asked, Fillion picked Bellisario as his favorite rookie yet to train.

Though she’s a new on-camera talent for the series, she isn’t exactly a rookie to The Rookie. Bellisario directed “The Thinker,” a season 8 episode of the series that aired in March.

The Rookie season 9 and the season premiere of The Rookie: North are both slated to kick off on Jan. 6, 2027.
