With the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival soon upon us, filmmaker Nicky Murphy has shared a behind-the-scenes look at the making of his vampire mockumentary, I Love Paris.
I Love Paris will be featured at this year's indie horror festival in Brooklyn, New York, at Nitehawk Cinema Williamsburg, premiering on Thursday, October 15. The movie follows the story of an aspiring underground singer named Paris who is told to improve her social media game in order to land a slot at a major music fest.
While she's filming a TikTok in a sketchy part of town, she's attacked by a vampire named Lutèce and turned into a creature of the night. With no intention of letting go of her dreams, Paris and Lutèce team up and hunt down the dream of music superstardom together. This comes as the director of Viewfinder also gave an inside look at his supernatural horror short at this year's festival.

In an exclusive interview with The Mirror US, Nicky shared his excitement to be featured in this year's Brooklyn Horror Film Festival. He said, "Honestly it's crazy to think that the film is traveling so much, like I never really imagined it resonate that much - so naturally we are really proud to be a part of the festival and it's such an honor that they have picked us for the opening night."
He continued, "I've never been to New York, but from what people tell me, it has some things in common with Paris, so I'm interested to see how the film plays in front of its first U.S. audience."

The film spans 110 minutes and is entirely in French featuring English subtitles for audiences. Nicky has jokingly teased the film was a dark comedy that's "like The Office if there were Parisian vampires in there."
When asked about his biggest creative inspiration for the film, Nicky shared that stylistically he was most inspired by the Belgian film C'est arrivé près de chez vous ("Man Bites Dog" in English).

He explained, "It's like a fake documentary following a serial killer who talks about his process, etc. I think there is a kind of 'punk rock' energy to that film that really resonated with me. Like just a group of friends with no money going out and making a film without permission - I mean I don't know if that is the actual story behind that film, but that certainly is what it feels like, and that's exactly what we did!"

Nicky shared that the film was also partly inspired by his real-life experiences, including his own time living in Paris throughout his twenties. He said that he's always been keen on bringing that feeling of being a young person chasing a dream in a city that "feels like a playground."
He added, "With that in mind, I was also really inspired by the lifestyle of Aminata Thiboult, who plays the lead role. She is a singer based in Paris who performs under the stage name 'Calamity,' and she is very deeply embedded in the underground music scene there. So I think at heart I just wanted to take her life, blend it with my own experience and turn it into a bloody Parisian fantasy that paints a picture of this strange time we are living in."

While the film explores a number of themes that the movie-goer can take away, Nicky said that it's focus is on "friendship, loyalty, and about how ambition can get in the way of those things." He added, "Then on a slightly deeper level, it's a film that attempts to paint a portrait of this strange time that we are living in in relation to social media and the desire and need to always be seen."
Sharing his favorite scene to film, Nicky said, "There are so many, but when I think back, I think the funnest was a scene where two of the vampire characters are killing time waiting for the sun to set so they can go outside, so they sit around prank calling people. I think we must have recorded like 20 different prank calls to random people on Leboncoin (Craigslist) and to some friends and family who didn't know it was us calling. We probably shot 2 hours of this, although in the movie it lasts like 20 seconds."

The film features a talented cast and crew, including Aminata Thiboult, Leonor Oberson, Louiza Aura, Noé Hermelin, Antoine Dumortier, Romane de Stabenrath, Anton Salachas, and Remi Giordan.
And in a special shoutout to the costume designer, Nicky added, "I'm not really one to boast, but f--- it. I'll say that critics have been saying all kinds of philosophical things about the movie and its themes, which is lovely and very much appreciated - but nobody is talking about the wardrobe.
"So I wanna go on record saying that Aminata Thiboult has created some of the coolest fits in cinema history in this movie. Find me a movie with a character that has better fits than Paris in I LOVE PARIS and I'll buy you a beer."
I Love Paris premieres at the Brooklyn Horror Festival on October 17.
